Overview of Lanka Ginger

Ginger is grown all over Sri Lanka and is believed to have been used as a spice from ancient times.
The origin of ginger is believed to be over 3,000 years ago in East Asia and which was cultivated as a commercial crop in many countries over the years. It is found to have been imported to the European countries as a spice by 1547 A.C.
Being available in the market as fresh or in dry form, ginger is powdered and used for different products. Ginger oils and oleoresins are used in the food industry as a spice to flavour curries, bakery and other food products and also in the perfumery industry. It is also a common ingredient in the Ayurveda medical system

Recipe for Ginger Tea
(Makes 1 serving)

Ingredients 

2 or 3 dried ginger slices chopped

1 cup (about 250 mL) boiling water

1 tea bag (black tea or herbal tea)

Optional: cinnamon , lemon slice, honey or
other sweetener to taste

Preparation

  • Place the chopped ginger slices in a mug
  • Add the boiling water and tea bag/ Cinnamon stick.
  • Cover for 10 minutes.
  • Remove the ginger and tea bag/ Cinnamon stick.
  • Optional: Add lemon slice, honey or other sweeteners to taste.
